Subject: ANNOUNCE: Elliott M. Werner May 31, 1955 - Dec. 7, 2004
Date: Tue, 07 Dec 2004 18:21:45 +0000I am sorry to have to announce that Elliott passed away peacefully early this morning after a stroke on November 13.
Elliot was an impassioned student of the world who, in addition to his work as a technology Guru spent his life in intellectual pursuit. He was a leader in the NYC Junto, a monthly meeting focusing on libertarianism, Objectivism and investing. In addition to his involvement in debate and learning, he edited the Junto newsletter, booked Junto speakers and maintained the Junto email list and discussion groups on the internet. His other passions included being an active avid member of Mensa, regularly found at Regional Gatherings (and always at the poker table) and Live Action Role-Playing Games which he also attended regularly.
His passing today is rather fitting as this year December 7 marks the begining of the Festival of Lights, Channukah, a day that celebrates the victory of free thought: of those who wished to study and learn over those who wished to keep others ignorant.
Elliott was an avid seeker in his life, always searching to understand the world around him and find ways to make it a better place for people to share ideas and ideals, particularly in the fields of government, education and law.
CURRENT understanding is that services will be held at Parkside Memorial Chapel in Rego Park, Queens tomorrow or, if not possible, on Thursday. Parkside is reachable by car, the number 60 bus or the Subway. By Subway, you take any LOCAL R, G, or V train to the 67th Avenue stop and go to the last car of the train and go up the stairs and walk ahead one block to the front of Parkway Memorial. From Manhattan you can take the E or F express to Roosevelt Avenue and then take any local R, G, or V train five stations to the 67th Avenue stop and go to the last car of the train and go up the stairs and walk ahead one block to the front of building.

Subject: Update II on Elliott Werner - Change in Location
Date: Mon, 06 Dec 2004 15:06:42 +0000The good news would appear to be that the Hospital has upgraded his condition sufficiently to move him into its Extended (or long-term) Care facility from the MICU. It is another building in the North Shore Hospital Complex.
It is called the Center for Extended Care and Rehabilitation (CECR), and he is on the 2nd floor in the RCU (Respiratory Care Unit). The actual address is 330 Community Drive (the main Hospital being 300) Visiting hours are now 11 A.M. to 8 P.M. I suggest you confirm this before going.
Some days are slightly better days and some hours are slightly better hours and some he remains wholly non-responsive. We're still not sure what he's perceiving. And I think talking to him about his interests including bringing a newspaper and/or magazine or periodical he might find interesting is good. Heck, babbling about your day is good.
Be forewarned that they are currently keeping the room rather warm, and thus layers including a light shirt or t-shirt as a base might be the most comfortable.
For a visual of the new building you can go to http://www.northshorelij.com/body.cfm?ID=2050
Subject: Update on Elliott Werner
Date: Wed, 01 Dec 2004The short overall news is positive, but prognosis is still unclear.
Today they were able to take him off the respirator and NOT give him a tracheotomy. He is breathing on his own with only the help of a nasal canula (oxygen). He remains sedated, but they are planning on lowering the dosage.
It remains wholly unclear how much awareness Elliott has. While they have done limited testing of comprehension, whether his responses reflect actual awareness on his part or pure reflex is simply not yet observable. Now that the respirator is gone, they may be able to do more helpful tests.
More than anything, it is a waiting game: in these cases time does help and heal.
You can visit, and the presence of friends who read and talk to him could be positive for him, but do not expect a response yet. Talking to him, telling him funny stories about times together and news in areas you know he finds interesting, is good. Ask the nurses if there's a better place to sit or stand for him to see you.
He is in North Shore Hospital in Manhasset in the MICU - Fifth Floor - Bed 14. Visiting hours are: 11-12; 2-3; 5-6; and 7:30 to 8:30.
Any questions or just to talk or check in with me or pass on a message to him, please feel free to call me at 973.890.2735; I'm a night owl, not a morning person, so better to call at 1 AM than 9 AM. You can also reach me via IM at allisondbl |at| hotmail.com or on yahoo as allisondbl or icq as 81851871.
Please feel free to forward this to anyone who wants to be apprised of Elliott's condition and tell them to email me if they want to be added to an update list.
On Elliott's behalf, I'd like to thank you and suggest that since the healing process will be extended that you keep him in your mind, heart and prayers for the long haul.
Thank you - Alley
